Build a Program Flyer with Canva's Magic Design

What This Does

Generates a set of ready-to-edit flyer layouts from a plain-language description of your event or program, so a manager with no design background can produce something that looks professionally made. No graphic designer on staff required, and no starting from a blank canvas.

Before You Start

  • A Canva account. Eligible nonprofits get Canva Pro free through Canva for Nonprofits
  • You're logged in at canva.com
  • The event or program details you want on the flyer: name, date, location, and a short description

Steps

1. Find the AI feature

From the Canva homepage, click Create a design and choose Flyer (or search "flyer" in the format picker). Once the editor opens, look for the Magic Design icon in the left-hand toolbar. Clicking it opens a text prompt panel.

2. Tell it what you need

Type a specific description rather than a vague topic. Mention the tone, the audience, and any colors tied to your organization's branding. Magic Design returns a set of complete, editable layout options generated from that one prompt.

3. Review and use the result

Scroll through the options and pick the layout closest to what you need. Click into any text box to edit copy, swap in your logo, and adjust colors to match your brand kit if you've set one up. When it looks right, click Share or Download to export as a PDF or image for printing or posting online.

Real Example

Scenario: Your after-school tutoring program is opening registration for the fall session and needs a flyer for the community center bulletin board and a matching social post.

What you type: "Flyer for a free after-school tutoring program for grades 3-8. Registration opens September 2, spots limited. Warm, welcoming, community-focused design. Blue and yellow color scheme to match our logo."

What you get: Eight to twelve layout options with headline, date, and a call-to-action already placed. You pick one, swap in your program's actual contact number and QR code, and download it in both flyer and social-post sizes.

Tips

  • Write prompts the way you'd brief a designer: audience, occasion, and mood, not just "make a flyer." Specific prompts produce far more usable first drafts than generic ones.
  • Save your logo and brand colors in Canva's Brand Kit once. Magic Design pulls from it automatically on every future design, so you stop re-uploading the same files.
  • Keep flyer text short. A crowded flyer reads worse no matter how good the layout is, so trim your bullet points before you paste them into the prompt.

Tool interfaces change. If a button has moved, look for similar AI/magic/smart options in the same menu area.
